Bhubaneswar: Recent statistics indicate a growing trust in Odisha's public transport system, with women constituting 57.44% of users on the Odisha Yatri app from October 2024 to July 2025. Out of 257,000 passengers, over 148,000 were female, showcasing advancements in safety, accessibility, and gender inclusivity within the state's urban transport framework.
Initiated by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in January 2025, the Odisha Yatri app commenced its pilot phase in October 2024. Monthly reports reveal a steady inclination among female users, with ridership peaking at 61.63% in January 2025. By July 2025, women maintained a significant 55.38% share, surpassing male usage. Transport officials credit this trend to several app features, such as real-time trip tracking, verified drivers, efficient last-mile connectivity, and a robust grievance redressal system. The app's collaboration with enforcement and transport authorities has created a secure and transparent commuting atmosphere, particularly advantageous for women and vulnerable groups.
A representative from the Housing & Urban Development (HUD) department remarked, “The data is clear—women are not just using the service; they are at the forefront of adopting Odisha Yatri. This demonstrates the government's commitment to gender-sensitive and inclusive transport solutions. It aligns with HUD’s vision of providing ‘Mobility as a Service’ (MaaS), ensuring comprehensive first and last-mile solutions for urban mobility.” In a display of community engagement, Odisha Yatri, in partnership with the State Transport Authority, offered complimentary auto rides to over 30,000 pilgrims during this year's Ratha Yatra, further emphasizing its public service mission.
Looking forward, the platform plans to extend its services to additional cities in Odisha, with intentions to introduce new offerings such as ambulance and boating services, broadening its impact on various mobility requirements. As Odisha progresses towards a more intelligent, secure, and inclusive public transport framework, the increasing involvement of women riders stands as a strong endorsement of the platform's reliability and the government's dedication to providing dignified and safe transport for everyone.
